When Your O Means Oops with Christina Walsh

May 30, 2023 0 Comments

Sometimes after baby, your “O” can mean oops! Yes, today we are talking about sex after the birth of a child. For many, pelvic floor dysfunction turns what was once an enjoyable part of life into something painful. Although this pain does not have to be constant, and with the help of PT you can have a better quality of life.

In today’s episode Yoga Birth | babies I speak with Christina Walsh, a physical therapist who specializes in integrative manual therapy and co-author of Tighten Your Tinkler, to dive really deep (pun intended) into the pelvic floor. If you’ve been listening to the podcast, you might be surprised that we’re talking about “tightening” the tinker, because you’ve probably heard me rail against overtightening. However, Christina does a great job of talking about the balance needed for a strong pelvic floor and what she means when she says “tighten up.” Christina and I talk about what new parents should expect when it comes to sex after having a baby, how to treat painful sex, Kegels (how they can help with pelvic floor dysfunction), and various ways to treat dysfunction. I think you will get a lot out of this conversation.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Learn about Christina and what led her to focus on pelvic floor physical therapy.
  • Some of the biggest misconceptions about pelvic floor health.
  • Indicators that someone does not need to pull up and do kegels.
  • Ways to relax the muscles of the pelvic floor.
  • Why Kegels are not the answer and how they can contribute to pelvic floor problems.
  • What new parents should expect when it comes to sex after pregnancy.
  • Why sex can be painful after the birth of a child.
  • A solution to ease painful sex after childbirth.
  • Resolving pelvic floor dysfunction prenatally.
  • Problems in the body that can cause pelvic floor pain.
  • Ways to solve problems with the pelvic floor without kegels or internal vaginal devices.
  • One last tip/advice Christina would like to give to new or expectant parents.
  • Where you can find Christina’s works.
