This is a week that clears away the noise and invites us to come back inward, as Pluto begins its five-month retrograde and a revealing lunar eclipse takes place in Scorpio. Prepare to journey through an underground world of mystery, surrender, transformation and renewal.

Retrograde Pluto in Aquarius

There is a theory that we perceive the invitations and frequencies of planets further from the Sun to be more complex, misunderstood, mysterious and subtle. Pluto, named after the Roman god of the underworld and located at the edge of our known solar system, is no exception.

A slow moving planet, Pluto returns once a year. Unlike Mercury retrograde, which brings us back to our thoughts and communication, Pluto’s influence cannot be grasped with the mind alone. It refers to the process of death, rebirth, transformation and the unconscious. It represents the unseen, mystery and hidden aspects of self and humanity. These are the deep reserves within us that we rarely tap into, including our shadows, our darkness, and our most vulnerable places.

When Pluto entered Aquarius on March 23, it was a long-awaited and influential shift in our cosmos, as the planet of transformation spends 11 to 30 years in each zodiac sign and hasn’t touched Aquarius in over 200 years. Aquarius is evolution. This is liberation, innovation, technology, and concern for collective progress and equality.

Starting May 1, Pluto will return to Aquarius for about a month before plunging back into Capricorn, where it has been for the past 15 years. In the early stages of retrograde under the influence of Aquarius, we will be asked to explore our attitudes towards independence, power and fear in ways that are comfortable and in ways that cause discomfort, fear and resistance.

Lunar eclipse of the full moon in Scorpio

A lunar eclipse greets us as the Earth sits between the Sun and the Moon in perfect alignment. This is the end and the beginning. It is the closing of a door before another one opens. This is communication with the lunar nodes, which in astrology represent purpose, destiny and awakening.

On May 6, our second eclipse of 2023 coincides with the Full Moon in Scorpio. Ruled by Pluto, Scorpio has the same invitations as the Roman god of the underworld. As an archetype, he cannot live on the surface of life. He needs to bare back, go down, venture through the hidden darkness where others fear to travel. He deals with truth, exposing everything that cannot survive in the face of truth so that it can be transformed.

This week’s Scorpio Lunar Eclipse is the culmination of an 18-month chapter of profound transformation, transmutation, rebirth and evolution. Exposing and revealing, Eclipse journeys deeply into what it means to be human. He sits with our emotions, brings to the surface our fears, mirrors that we cling to and try to control. It brings to light what sits within us that is not real so that we can continue to move toward what is.

Your invitation

Both Pluto and Scorpio represent aspects of humanity that are uncomfortable for many of us. Journeying through our inner shadow and facing what sits within the discarded parts of ourselves is not easy. It is, however, loving. And it is deeply healing.

Pluto and Scorpio are the missing pieces of the puzzle that bring us home to the wholeness of our human experience. This week encourages us to be vulnerable. To peel off the layers and sit with what lies beneath. To witness for ourselves the parts we have disowned and cast into the shadows, all so that we can achieve acceptance and slowly rebuild ourselves.

As Pluto begins its retrograde, allow the cyclical journey of your becoming and misalignment to be what it is. We are embarking on a five-month journey of transforming our stories around freedom, power, and independence—meeting all that is rooted in something other than truth so we can meet what is true. Transformation, healing, growth and evolution cannot be controlled, planned or conceptualized. It is traveled. It is felt. And it often seems that this is happening to us.

During the Scorpio Lunar Eclipse, take a moment to honor who you’ve become over the past 18 months—how you’ve changed and what you’ve faced in the name of transformation. This Full Moon is the culmination of this intense journey we’ve been on together.

Ask yourself what ultimate liberation awaits you so that you can be free, fully rooted in the beauty of your humanity, empowered and in love with every moment of your life?
