The Plunge Cold Tub review, tested and medically tested

“While cryotherapy is a great treatment for most of us, I recommend that patients with high blood pressure avoid it because of the cold shock response,” Bonnie advises. “When you submerge your body in cold water, your blood vessels constrict. This causes an involuntary sudden increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and even breathing rate. It’s not a problem if you’re able to compensate, but if you have high blood pressure or take medication for high blood pressure or have a history of cardiovascular disease, then you won’t be able to compensate properly.”

Bonnie adds that pregnant women should also avoid cryotherapy. “Differences in body temperature can cause fetal growth retardation, premature birth, and other complications,” she explains.

If you’re not sure if a cold plunge is a good idea for you, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor.
