How to use castor oil for eyelashes, from an optometrist

“I’m an optometrist and I put castor oil on my eyes every day,” says optometrist Carly Rose in a recent TikTok video.
Rosa clearly states that it won’t improve your vision or the health of your eyes (as some people on the internet claim), but it’s still safe for your eyelashes.
That being said, Rose is strict about the castor oil she uses—considering it’s coming up close to your eyes, it’s worth some extra attention.
“I always look for castor oil that is organic, unrefined, hexane-free, and cold-pressed,” she declares. Her top pick is Castor Oil by Kate Blanc Cosmetics if you want to skip the search.
Even with an optometrist-approved product, you must be mindful of how to use it. She explains that your eyes, hands and face should be like this fully clean — no makeup, SPF, dirt, etc.
“I clean my hands and put a couple of drops on my finger to really penetrate my lash line, browbones, and lids,” she says. As for benefits, Rosa lists eyelash growth, eyebrow growth and dry eye support.
As with any product used around the eyes, it’s important to make an effort to find a high-quality product and apply it correctly. Those with any eye health concerns should still talk to a doctor before trying any eye cosmetics, just to be safe.
