While pain is certainly not a universal problem, CBD holds promise for relief because it takes a whole-body approach, according to Mignon Walker, MD, director of SLIP Emotional Resistance Training.
“CBD binds to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) that are present in the brain, immune system, heart, digestive tract, bladder, and reproductive organs,” says Walker. “The overall effect is to restore balance and reduce inflammation.”
These receptors reside in our endocannabinoid system (ECS), a massive network at the cellular level that helps us maintain homeostasis. Our bodies either make cannabinoids naturally, or you can inject phytocannabinoids (which come from plants like hemp) through a product like hemp-derived CBD.
“CBD’s pain-reducing effect is the result [the cannabinoid] binding to receptors that are known to transmit pain information to the brain, including serotonin, opioid, and the less discussed vanilloid receptors, which transmit signals about pain and inflammation,” says Walker.
