To do this, they used data from the Irish Longitudinal Study of Aging, which included information on activity levels, depression and other health factors.

After their analysis, they found that just 20 minutes of physical activity (such as brisk walking) five days a week was associated with a 16% reduction in depressive symptoms and a 43% lower risk of major depression. .

And hence, the more participants exercised, the greater the benefits they experienced (ie, exercising for longer periods of time led to greater reductions in depressive symptoms and risk of major depression).

Lead study author Eamon Laird, Ph.D. As explained in the press release, these findings are particularly relevant given the high prevalence of depression in the elderly population. “At a minimum,” he adds, “try to engage in at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a day at least five days a week, with greater benefits seen at higher doses.”

Which brings us to the next point.
